Through brainstorming ideas in the early stages of this class, a group member suggested looking into the reflective material found on safety vests, shoes and other outerwear. The branded name of the reflective material is called 3M Scotchlite reflective material. This material doesn’t reflect like mirror which causes light beams to bounce in another direction at the same angle, but causes light to bounce back to the direction of the light source. This effect is called retroreflection.

since the reflectivity can only be seen when near the light source, there could be an opportunity for the use of this reflective material to act like some form of invisible marker that the Augmented Reality component could use.

I found it difficult to find a source for this material, only getting lucky finding reflective binding from a spotlight store (crafts store). I did manage to find an alternative:

I did manage to get a can of this spray online and the class is more than welcome to use it for testing and for potential use in the pavilion.

I then started looking into basic structure shapes by exploring through grasshopper.

I was looking for a form that was really simple, so i started playing with straight lines and how a form could be created with them. I eventually created a pointed model which consisted of 12 straight members that were angled and connected to create the form. I played with this form within the context and had different ideas in terms of scale, orientation, and quantity of the forms through the space.

after receiving feedback from the presentation, it was clear that the group needed more focus on certain aspects of this pavilion project. I had a quick look at the potential interactions to the physical structure. After deciding as a group that the main theme would revolve around stress relief for the visiting students, the first thing that came to mind was that the space needed to provide physical resting points. I came up with a handful of ideas for this depicted by some terrible sketches.
