The Ones in the Arena: Joyn
“Web3 is putting power in the hands of content creators like never before. There is hope that we’re entering a time where artists can work sustainably without worry of livelihood, and where they have a direct channel and shared interest with their communities.” — Sofiane, Engineering Lead, Joyn
Joining us for the first time in the Arena is Joyn, a creative hub for Web3 media projects where users can share, refine, and remix ideas through open co-creation.
As our security researchers prepare to dig into Joyn’s codebase, we asked Sofiane, Engineering Lead at Joyn, to talk to us about what they’re working towards, how they think about security, and what they love most about Web3.
What are you building, and what sets it apart from similar offerings in the space?
Joyn is an ecosystem of talent, knowledge and resources for emerging creators to co-create, promote and launch NFT projects. We provide project blueprints (project page, milestones, prompts), web3 building blocks (NFT membership passes, royalty splits, airdrops, output collections), and community resources (network of co-creators and support programs).
What’s your vision for your project? What are you building towards in the longer view?
Our mission is to make the process of creative collaboration accessible to as many as possible, and to empower every creator regardless of their number of followers, knowledge, or access to resources.
Looking into the future, we want to become a go-to platform for metaverse content creation, and to see a lot of cross-pollination and remixing among the projects built with Joyn.
What’s the most innovative idea in your protocol?
We fully embrace modularity and interoperability with our architecture. We have modules that extend the ERC721 & ERC1155 standards, which provide functionalities beyond minting and transferring token instances.
Eg. NFT collections launched through Joyn out of the box allow project creators to split royalties among an arbitrary number of recipients, which means we could achieve shared royalties between everyone involved in the project.
This paves the way for open co-creation of web3 content, where all contributors may share ownership and royalties, and benefit directly from the project’s success. With that as a foundation, this will also unlock content attribution / remixing as a new class of use case based on inter-referencing projects.
It takes courage to undergo a public audit by a swarm of anonymous security researchers. It also says a lot about how much you prioritize security. What advice would you give to those on the fence?
Better to foresee an issue before it becomes an issue. That means build in the open and have more eyes on your code, so you lower the chance of getting caught off guard by “unknown unknowns”.
Security has become an increasingly vital topic for the Web3 space. How do you think the ecosystem needs to evolve in order to rise to the challenge?
In my opinion, nothing will ever replace being educated and staying up to date with security best practices, and with a conscious approach to reviewing and testing what we build. That said, two things I’d love to see are (1) more self-serviceable tooling options, and (2) more experiments with models that align auditors’ interest with project teams.
What gets you most excited about DeFi?
Web3 is putting power in the hands of content creators like never before. There is hope that we’re entering a time where artists can work sustainably without worry of livelihood, and where they have a direct channel and shared interest with their communities.
Complete the following sentence: “I wish more Web3 projects would…”
… be less focused on speculation and hype, and be more focused on creating long term utility for token holders.
