Running partners for code
In the last newsletter, I announced my excitement/trepidation about the fact that you can now start or join a study group on CodeBuddies.
Since the announcement, here are some study groups that members in the community have started:
- Coding Bootcamps Interview Prep (Tagline: Practice pair programming to ace your technical interview! Started by Natalia)
- CSS for beginners (Tagline: Style up your websites! Learn CSS. Become a style master. Started by arturolei)
- TDD with Python (Tagline: Let’s complete the Obey the Testing Goat book. Started by linda)
- fast.ai part 1: Practical Deep Learning for Coders (Tagline: going through the fast.ai part 1 course. Started by sabliao)
- C# Yellow Programming Book (Tagline: Understanding basic knowledge in C#. Started by medenica)
- Javascript30 (Tagline: Build 30 things in 30 days with 30 tutorials (Wes Bos). Started by linda)
- Elixir (Tagline: getting started from the ground up. Started by will)
- Interview Practice (Tagline: Practice and discuss problems from LeetCode, LintCode, etc. Started by bryantt)
- Readings in Computer Science & Technology (Tagline: Reading/discussion of academic/technical papers in CS & Tech. Started by bethanyg)
- PyStudy (Tagline: Intermediate/Advanced Topics in Python and Programming. Started by bethanyg)
Each study group is self-organized, corresponds to a Slack channel on CodeBuddies’ Slack workspace, and contains a 24/7 hangout where group members can meet to chat/silently screenshare without scheduling a hangout in advance.
In addition, on each members’ tab, group members can share their current status with respect to the learning goal(s) of the group.
Huge thanks to new contributor Connie for submitting the pull request that implemented this feature, and to distalx for multiple PR reviews.
Of course, we still have improvements to make to the study groups feature; if you have a suggestion for how it could be improved to help learners connect better, feel free to file a Github issue.
Shout-outs (thank-yous?)
- Shout-out to all the Hacktoberfest contributors, including folks who filed new issues to report bugs or suggest improvements — especially since study groups is still a work in progress.
- Shout-out to everyone who’s been helping each other on Slack:
- Shout-out to bethanyg for scheduling a bunch of hangouts for this upcoming week, including one for Co-working and Programming Motivation on Sunday and early morning Morning Python Warmup with Exercism.io hangouts.
In case you’re wondering why you’re getting this email: at some point you signed up for the CodeBuddies Slack.
We’re a free, safe, open-sourced and supportive community entirely backed by independent code learning volunteers.
The website we started building last year to help ourselves meet our learning goals still isn’t completely “done,” but I am incredibly proud of all the work that everyone has contributed so far.
Many thanks to the backers and sponsors on our Open Collective for helping keep this project alive: Vanessa Genneralli, distalx, Al Fougy, codesponsor.io, and pillitiere. And a special thank you to DigitalOcean for sponsoring our web hosting for the next year!
Have a good week,
Linda
