A Brief Overview

CodeChef-VIT is one of the largest student-run organizations in India, based in Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. Our aim is to promote the all — round development of students through interactive sessions, events, workshops, and projects that help them perceive real-world problems.

We are one of the 281 (as of March 2022) college chapters of CodeChef, which is under the patronage of the renowned educational platform, Unacademy. In 2021, we were awarded the title of the best CodeChef chapter in India.

History

CodeChef-VIT was founded in 2015 by a bunch of aspiring students of our college as a Competitive Coding-based chapter. Since then, we have grown into one of the prominent chapters of Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, and have explored various other technical domains as well.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, offline operations ceased from March 2020. However, this was barely a hurdle as our team continued to function at the topmost level via different online modes. Our online workshops and events garnered huge publicity.

In 2021, our annual flagship hackathon, DEVSOC’21 turned out to be a huge hit and had around two thousand registered participants.

Team

As of March 2022, we have nearly seventy core members, with new incoming members expected to arrive in a matter of days as a result of our recently concluded recruitment drive.

Our members are chosen after a series of interviews that test the critical thinking ability, determination, and skills possessed by the candidates, with the best of the lot getting that golden ticket to CodeChef-VIT.

Candidates can apply through four major domains. Once selected, they can also migrate or simultaneously work for other domains if they wish. This is because we aim to strive hard to educate and guide our members by equipping them with a plethora of skills, thereby enabling them to make significant contributions to the community.

Structure

The chapter is run by a handful of board members (3rd years), who preside over the senior core (sophomores) and junior core (freshers). Board members have tenures of twelve months, after which a bunch of senior core members will be promoted to board members based on their contributions to the club and their visions for the future. The cycle will then repeat. The core members work in four major domains:

Technical

A Technical Chapter without a Technical Domain is like a guitar without strings. Our Technical Team has worked on many top-notch projects with the aim of benefitting the chapter and society.

Our Team specializes in various fields, such as Web Development, Machine Learning, Blockchain, AR/VR, Mobile App Development, Cyber Security, and Competitive Coding.

Management

An organization needs a number of astute people to run it, in order to ensure maximum productivity and efficiency. Our Management Team comprises some of the smartest and sharp-witted people in the college and is the backbone of the chapter.

The Management Team works towards achieving several goals, such as organizing events and workshops on a mammoth scale, receiving sponsorships from relevant companies, enforcing a positive environment within the chapter, and ensuring that the operations are smoothly handled.

Editorial

“A pen is mightier than the sword!”. Well, we certainly are not competing with any sword wielders, but we have quite a few people who can wield their pens to write amazing content.

The Editorial Team writes captions for our social media posts, prepares for professional emails, writes blogs (including this one!), and creates content for our websites.

Design

The Design Team makes posters and videos with various aims, such as promoting events and making announcements amongst other things. Our social media pages, such as our Instagram and Twitter handles look attractive because of our Design Team.

A lot of our members contribute to multiple domains and ensure maximum efficiency in terms of their work.

Events

CodeChef-VIT is known for its events and hackathons, which have helped it become one of the most well-known chapters on campus. Our events have inspired us to take bigger steps and accomplish higher heights through our cooperation, passion, and determination.

We host several competitive coding based events and workshops, such as our flagship competitive coding event, Cook-Off which has had 6 iterations throughout the years. Apart from this, our flagship hackathon, DEVSOC (Developer’s Sprint of Code) has amassed participation in great numbers since its inception.

In 2020, a series of events named “Road to DEVSOC” was announced, which served as a buildup to the main hack. The Road to DEVSOC contains events covering diversified fields; Essentials, which involves mentorship programs; TechChronicles, an event where the tech bloggers convene; Consilio, a design-based event; and Code Invicta, an event specially crafted for the Competitive Coders.

You can get to know more about our events and other exciting things we are up to on our website www.codechefvit.com (big shoutout to our web development team).

It takes an immense amount of teamwork and perseverance to get things to fruition and attain even greater heights, but each member of our team is dedicated to our goals. Our members are a close knit group that stick together through thick and thin.

CodeChef-VIT is more than just a chapter, we are a family.
