Problem space

Now that everyone in the world is staying indoors due to COVID 19, we’ve seen the explosion of a lot of Zoom meet-ups and Live streams. People are looking for new ways to socialise online — whether that’s to meet their friends, or to meet new people. We can assume by default that all “events” for the next couple months are going to be online.

I designed an app for a fairly new startup in market. It is a “media and edTech startup”. With this app, you can buy tickets to online events.

🔍 Research

Before diving straight into design and approaching solutions, I went ahead and looked for some existing players to understand -

  • How does event and course registration works ?
  • What type of business model is used while charging for registration and buying tickets?
  • How does the algorithm works while suggesting courses and events in order to make the experience more user-friendly?
  • What are some of the pain points that the users experience with the current solutions?

📈Competitive analysis

According to new data from Crayon, a research firm based in Boston, 41% of business professionals “strongly agree” that competitive intelligence is critical to their company’s success.

In this analysis I just focussed on the pain points of the users which I collected from review section in google play store.

Insights from competitive analysis…..

  • Users want seamless and simple buying experience for registering in courses and events. Many users find the existing UI a bit chaotic and confusing in the above apps, which hinders their experience and fail to meet their needs.
  • They want costumer service to be readily accessible in case they are having problems.
  • Users want information about the event as well as the organisers. This ensures legitimacy of the event in the users mind and also they can clear their doubts(if any) by directly contacting the organisers.
  • They want the app to show them relevant results regarding both events and courses. Users want proper filters to sift through and find the best event which suits them.
  • Users want a trustworthy and simple payment procedure. In case of cancellation by the organisers/users, they want a clear refund procedure.

🧠Ideation

Before jumping to ideation, I wanted to make some points clear about the app which will help me in deciding the functionalities and user flow.

  • Connect will only provide services for online events and courses. It may provide tickets for offline events in the future depending on the pandemic situation.
  • Users will be able to able to buy tickets/register for events. For courses, there will be a choice between an annual subscription or lifetime course subscription.

Now with all this information, I started ideating about the functionality and user flow of the app.

🧩Functionalities that should be present :-

These are the main functionalities which will be present in the app :-

  1. User Profile — to set and edit their profile, change email address/phone number, and ability to change their interests(for which they can choose to be notified when any new event in that select domain comes up).
  2. Filter — to sort out events which meets users needs. It will contain sorting options based on domain, fees and rating. Calendar option will be available under filters to sort out events based on dates.
  3. Constant Updates — will be given to the user about any new event based on user’s interests. In case of events, users will be notified if any event is postponed, regarding any sort of transaction failure or any change to the event structure.

🥸 Main user flow for the app :-

As I had already decided my functionalities that should be present in our app, I started laying out the various possible user flows before breaking it down into IA and ended up with this one since this requires minimal user’s effort while buying tickets for events or subscription for courses.

📌Information architecture

Now, it’s time to break down further into each and every functionality and sort them into clear hieararchy of features, before wireframing the designs.

🥸Wireframing

After doing the necessary research and figuring out the information architecture, I moved onto wireframing the app.

Visual Design

The most awaited part of the entire case study is here.😌

Color Pallete🎨

I used dark shade of grey (#111 Hex code) as my primary color and medium light shade of red as my seconday color (#fd6b54 Hex code) as my Brand color.

Neutral shades

Typography✏️

I wanted a sans serif font that has a balanced look and multiple font weights to play around and go with the simple and minimalistic look. Helvetic Neue is a sans serif typeface family which has a balanced look and the letterform preserving harmony with elements. It also supports multiple weights, including Thin, Thin Italic, Light Italic, Regular, Regular Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Black. So I went ahead with Helvetica Neue.

👀Logo

App deals with events registeration only, so i wanted the logo to convey that.

Onboarding

Onboarding plays a major role in converting the users and making them use the app. So it is important to covey the value that the product brings to the user clearly and also making the onboarding experience seamless to avoid drop-off.

You can go through the whole app design from the figma file given below😎

🎉And that’s a wrap!
