Continuing our special series here on Code.gov where you get to know the members of the team through a Spotify playlist, we introduce Joe Castle, Federal Source Code Policy and Open Source Subject Matter Expert at GSA, supporting the Code.gov team. Each month, a new Spotify playlist will be featured, and we invite you to have a listen and share with us on social media tracks that you think would be good additions to the mix. For July, as Joe prepares for upcoming endurance events out west, his own Spotify Playlist doubles not only as Music to Code By but Music to Train By.

“My musical interests stem from many events in my life beginning with a memory of my mom buying the Michael Jackson Thriller album, seeing my uncle perform as lead in musicals in our local town theater, to buying my first guitar and studying music in college.” That in-depth approach to music tends to flavor his listening habits, those leaning towards solid instruments as found in blues, jazz, and rock. “If it’s something where I need more background and less distraction, I choose John Coltrane, Miles Davis, or Dave Brubeck. If it’s something where I really want to listen to a particular instrument — usually guitar — I go with good guitar bands or artists like Gary Clark Jr. or Tedeschi Trucks.”

Joe’s offered playlist includes songs that help him prep for an upcoming outing in Colorado, so whether coding or riding a mountain bike for long distances, this is his soundtrack for making it to the finish line.
