Cat Ba and Hanoi
CodeFX Occasionally #64–5th of August 2018
boy, was I lazy! I don’t really know what happened there in April, but once the streak of weekly newsletters was sufficiently broken, I never got back on track. And I’m honestly not seeing that happen in the future, with me going on holiday and conferences and all.
So here’s my proposal: We turn CodeFX Weekly into CodeFX Occasionally and never speak of my failures again, ok? And after 111111 issues it is only fitting that issue #1000000 should follow a new format. 😉
To give closure to a great holiday, I want to tell you about Cat Ba and Hanoi, but one reason for my monumental procrastination was my unwillingness to write some prose to accompany the picture. And so I gave myself permission, to not do that. It’s mostly just pics…
I send this newsletter out some Fridays. Or other days. Sometimes not for weeks. But as an actual email. So, subscribe!
Cat Ba is supposed to look like this:
But the weather was shitty and so it looked more like this:
This was the only part of our holiday that we weren’t too happy with, but on the last day, I went hiking away from the coast where the weather was better and that was fun:
Random impressions from Cat Ba island:
Hanoi was the last leg in our journey through Vietnam and I loved it so much! It’s just as chaotic as HCMC, but I found it to have even more character. Or maybe that’s just because I was already getting nostalgic, who knows?
I tried to sort these pictures as I did with Cat Ba’s, but somehow that makes them less impressive, less colorful, less entertaining. So here you go, wall of pictures:
Kháng chiến chống Mĩ — The American War
While in Vietnam, I didn’t learn too much about the American War (what we westerners call the Vietnam War), but very recently Ward’s/Burn’s/Novick’s TV documentary The Vietnam War appeared on Netflix. These are ten episodes, each between 80 and 120 minutes long (the level of detail is insane), and I highly recommend watching them.
With that settled the newsletter returns to Java — I’ve got plenty of stuff flying around my head and I hope to put some of it in writing soon.
