Before getting into ‘how to’ hire engineers, I want to bring your attention to ‘how to not’ hire engineers.

Current processes of developer assessment are inaccurate and insufficient

Resume based filtering

  • High volumes of CVs are difficult to screen
  • Credentials or bias can make the weak performers seem convincing
  • Hidden talent may not make it through resume screen

Data Structure and Algorithmic Puzzles

  • Insufficient skills to test on the job competency
  • Hackable approach often adopted to crack interviews
  • Inapplicable for lateral hiring

Technical Interviews

  • Insufficient time to capture data points that matter
  • Multiple rounds for consensus on guesswork
  • Developer hours wasted

Machine Coding Rounds & Take home assignments

  • Candidates don’t want to give these assignments at multiple companies, therefore high drop offs
  • Evaluation is time-consuming, difficult to deploy and test

Just as companies now outsource server management to AWS, they should be able to outsource technical hiring. The flaw with current external recruiting firms is they don’t reliably deliver enough good candidates to build trust with companies.
