Education is the passport to the future — Malcolm X

Ramya, who loves role plays, interactive games, discussions that happen in her class, clears her doubts instantly from the teacher in the traditional learning set up, is finding difficulty in clarifying her doubts and lost her interest in E-Learning, as a lack of active participation from her peers due to the internet connectivity issues & continuous voice disturbances.

Sujit, who is a voracious reader and shy by nature, started loving the Online Learning platform as it gives him immense time to ponder upon his favourite books & started enrolling himself in a wide variety of courses that his colleges couldn’t offer.

Kumar, who is creative in head & proactive guy started missing out the fun and learnings that he used to get in college from communicating & leading the teams by coordinating with his peers & seniors and the physical guidance he used to get from his Professors & Head of the departments in organizing the events, workshops & fests in his college. Now, he isn’t having his learnings anymore through E-learning mode.

A lazy bum like Srikanth used to listen to the classroom training with keen attention as he knows that his teacher will ask him questions or make him give a presentation at the end of every class, isn’t learning anything from his Online learning sessions.

Prakash who is working in an MNC & wants to climb up the ladder in his professional career finds E-learning beneficial, as he can take classes at his convenience. It saves him a lot of time & travel costs.

If you’re wondering, how come the same E-Learning platform be beneficial to some and boring to others? Then, have a look at what I found out on it.

E-Learning VS Traditional Education

In this era, with all the technological advancements, Online Learning turns out to be an amazing platform where the interaction happens between the Instructor and learner. The instructor can use visual aids like presentations, videos, audios and can present verbally, can share pdf’s, online manuals, handbooks, course materials & even few E-learning platforms provide tools to track the attendance of the participants, monitor the assignment submissions, having the recorded sessions if the participant misses the session, take online polls & questions during the live sessions, have discussion forums, chat boards.

If you think having a Laptop/Desktop and a good internet connection can make you learn. Then, you’re wrong my friend! Along with it, you need to have the self-discipline to complete the courses that you’ve enrolled & submitted the assignments on time without being monitored by someone continuously.

However, nothing can beat the learning that you get from traditional learning. It’s not only the classroom interactive way of teaching that you get from lecturers & learning from your peers but also the learnings that you get from people right from going to the college & coming back. You meet new people, try to have a conversation, understand what’s happening in their life & helping them in your way, learning some jugaad for bunking the classes, building your own gang, being in a team, working for a team, leading the people, communicating, organizing all these can never be taught by an Online course. One needs to nurture these qualities by doing it, which happens in traditional learning.

The Bitter Truths

With a massive bandwidth gap in the entire country, it is hard to believe that every student in the nation takes advantage of online platforms. Along with this infrastructure, the gap adds another problem to online education, which prevails in a developing country. With more students who don’t have hardware support, internet connectivity, and electricity, the implementation of online education becomes far harder, especially in rural countries. Many teachers have a preference for dropping an academic year as they could not execute the classes. Moreover, the lack of personal interaction with students, zoom bombing makes this process far less secure & complex. The stable environment in traditional classes regularity makes it more discipline, unlike virtual set-up.

Accessing the online set-up becomes harder for poor & backward sections of society, which depend entirely on government school for learning. Most of their parents rely on daily wage for day-to-day activity, which is hard to achieve due to lockdown. These people don’t even have basic amenities on how they can turn up for online education.

Conclusion

Learning is a continuous journey. Be it Online or Traditional, one needs to have the appetite of curiosity & learning. Just by attending all the sessions be it E-Learning or Traditional Classroom training, one can neither guarantee you a fat paycheck job nor your success. The nation is going through a paradigm shift towards online education & work from home from the traditional style. So we should also learn to shift our gear & adapt to changes. If you inculcate the attitude for learning and giving your efforts sincerely, you will reach your destiny for sure.
