A hiring manager is a person who takes the final call on whether you fit well into the role they are looking for.

The article below is solely based on my own experience of being a hiring manager in different technology companies across multiple sectors and countries.

Knowing what you are going in for

People often make the mistake of mixing up the words “role”, candidate “profile”, and “job description”.

A role is a description of what the person is perceived as when taking up the job position. For example, a Senior Software Engineer is expected to take and influence decision-making on technology topics within a team. This is what they are expected to “be”.

A profile is what you, the applicant to the job bring to the table. It does not always have a tight coupling with the role or the job description; although this differs from company to company. A profile defines what your strengths are, what your past experiences are, and what you as a person are capable of pulling off. It is all about YOU.

A job description is a definition of the typical tasks that you will be expected to do. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will likely be expected to take part in assisting your manager with technology topics, solving complex technical problems in the…
