FROM IIT BOMBAY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TO DATA SCIENCE INTERN AT OYO #Experiences
Key take away from Data Science OYO Internship and How I got there…
The journey with Data Science for me started back in January 2018 and as I got more into it, I found myself getting an internship opportunity at the Oravel Private Limited (OYO), Gurgaon. It was a two month internship program which I had with the company. The selection for the internship was done through campus recruitment for some and for some through Linked In.
The experience with the company elevated my interest into the field of data science even more and increased my eagerness to explore various prospects of data science. The decision to intern with OYO goes with fact that being a hospitality company it has lots of customers and large amount of data coming from them to deal with. So this is where data science comes into picture and an opportunity to work upon. Thus numerous projects are assigned to the interns, covering various aspects of data science.
The work environment at the company is quite engaging and lively. You feel inspired at times looking at the employees working with focus and completing their targets, it’s quite hard to find people who aren’t dedicated to their work. At the same time people are always there to help you out and hang out for a break as well. Interns at OYO are assigned mentors who help them out with their projects and guide them for the two months. With your project creating an impact at the national level, you always feel responsible and consider yourself part of the company and this is what is best about the internship experience at OYO.
The opportunity to intern at OYO also provides the chance to interact with some top brains in data science, interact with them and learn. For me, right from revamping an old system to providing a new model to analysing data and providing suggestions all of it has been part of my Learnings. One can do number of courses related to data science but eventually the real learning is obtained from working on projects or working in a company environment. Until practical implementation of any knowledge is done it’s not possible to be good at it. That’s why at the end of the internship program I feel confident enough to work in any company on any project.
A piece of advice…
Something I can tell someone is that getting into this field is not a difficult task, one just needs to be dedicated enough to learn various disciplines in the field, have curiosity about the prospects of it and improve analytical skills. These ingredients are enough for anyone to enter this field, as languages keep coming and changing with time, one can learn them anytime. The wisdom to data science comes with failed experiments so it’s all about exploring as the future is going to be data driven.
