Hi, I am Nandita, and I am currently a pre-final year student pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at NIT Bhopal. Last year, I was awarded the Generation Google Scholarship (GGS) from the APAC region, and in this blog post, I would like to share my journey of becoming a GGS scholar.

As a computer science student, I was always looking for opportunities to gain more knowledge and experience in the field. When I heard about the Generation Google Scholarship, I knew that it was an opportunity that I could not miss.

When I applied for the scholarship in my first year, I was not shortlisted during the resume round. Initially, I was disheartened, but I did not let this rejection define me. Instead, I took it as a learning experience and used the feedback to improve my application. I spent the next year focusing on my studies and working on projects related to computer science, which helped me become a stronger candidate for the scholarship.

When the application process started in my second year, I was more prepared and confident. It was a time-consuming process, but I enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on my experiences and share my passion for computer science.

>> Application Process

I first got to know about this scholarship opportunity from a senior and applied for it during the application phase in the previous year. The online application consisted of general background details, resume, academic transcript, and two essay questions, and it was open to all students who satisfied the eligibility criteria. To be eligible, the applicant must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree for the next academic year, be in the first or second year of study at an accredited university in the Asia-Pacific, and be studying in a Computer Science related field.

>> Google Online Challenge

The Google Online Challenge was a coding test that took place after the initial application round. It consisted of two coding questions, which were easy to medium level. The applicants had to attempt only one question, and the coding test was designed to evaluate the applicant’s coding skills and logical thinking. The coding test was an essential component of the selection process, and it was challenging to perform well under the given time constraints.

>>Interview Process

After the initial application and the Google Online Challenge, I was selected for the Interview Round. The interview was a 30-minute video conversation with a Googler, and it was the most nerve-wracking part of the entire process. However, I prepared well for the interview and was able to showcase my skills and passion for computer science. I emphasized my academic achievements, projects, and experiences related to computer science, and I also highlighted my leadership skills and involvement in extracurricular activities.

>>Results

When I received the news that I was selected as a Generation Google Scholar, I was overjoyed. It was a dream come true, and I felt proud of myself for achieving this milestone. I was also excited about the opportunity to attend a Virtual Retreat with all the other scholars. During the retreat, I had the chance to connect with other students from different countries who shared my passion for computer science. We had many inspiring conversations and learned from each other’s experiences.

In conclusion, my journey of becoming a Generation Google Scholar was a challenging and rewarding experience. I learned many valuable lessons about perseverance, hard work, and resilience. I would encourage all aspiring computer science students to apply for this scholarship and never give up on their dreams. Remember, rejections do not define you, and there are always other opportunities waiting for you. Work hard, be kind to yourself and others, and never stop learning.

Here’s a glimpse ✨ from last year’s virtual retreat ;)
