#TechSalariesChat, the tl;dr version
Today I participated on the #TechSalariesChat, with H I R E D and impressive guest Dr. Jessica Kirkpatrick.
I set an alarm so I wouldn’t miss this chat. That was excellent thinking on my side. If you didn’t have a chance to join, let me tell you it was an extremely resourceful and eye opening exchange.
My tl;dr points:
Most people don’t look at salary as the most important thing when taking a job. It’s important, but our fulfillment doesn’t come from money only.
Despite so many tools to “evaluate” companies, asking in the community and the vibe or gut feeling you get from a listing/interview also weighs heavily when deciding to go or not with an offer.
The advice when negotiating is knowing your worth, logging all the things (past and future), and then ask.
Now, this doesn’t mean being ultra specific. Think Vito Corleone “Never tell anyone outside the Family what you are thinking” where the Family is You. In more professional words…
Finally, the consensus is that tech skills may be acquirable in different settings, but behind it there should be a realization that great enterprises involve communication, problem-solving, learning to learn… and that goes a long way when you are the candidate.
Maybe learning to code is not for everyone, but not all of the tech industry’s flux relies on writing code. We know there’s a lack of representation, we know there are so many available positions, and the answer can’t only be hard-coded, it has to be human-coded as well.
