Alongside the new iPhone 14 and Apple Watch, Apple has unveiled the highly anticipated AirPods Pro 2nd generation headphones. These have received some rather interesting new features that take them a few steps forward once again.

At the heart of the new series is Apple’s brand new H2 chipset. It is directly responsible for most of the improvements in the form of better active ambient noise cancellation, pass-through mode or overall sound quality.

In this regard, we must also not forget to mention the arrival of touch control, the integration of the speaker into the wireless charging case or the U1 chip for precise search using Find. But it doesn’t stop there. The 2nd generation AirPods Pro has also improved significantly in terms of battery life, with an additional XS-sized earpiece or even a loop for attaching the case.

But as users have begun to point out, the new generation also brings a rather interesting new feature. Apple offers a free engraving option for its 2nd generation AirPods Pro, just like its other headphones. For example, you can engrave your name, emoticons, and more onto the case.

The choice is yours. Abroad, you can even have your Memoji engraved. What’s special this year, however, is that when you pair or connect AirPods Pro 2, the engraving will also appear directly on the preview on your iPhone. How is this even possible?

Viewing engraving in iOS

As we mentioned above, if you order the new 2nd generation AirPods Pro from Apple and have the free engraving added to their charging case, then you’ll see it not only physically when you look at the case itself but also digitally within iOS. You can see what it looks like in the attached tweet below from @PezRadar.

But the question is how something like this is possible. After all, Apple didn’t mention this news during the presentation of the new generation, and it was only after the headphones entered the market that it started talking about it properly — even though the possibility of engraving is mentioned on the official AirPods Pro 2 page.

Unfortunately, there’s no official explanation for this, so we can only guess how it works. In a way, however, it’s pretty straightforward. Since the engraving is added by Apple itself when ordering through the Apple Store Online, you must assign a specific theme to a given AirPods model, which iOS can then automatically identify and display the correct version accordingly.

Like iPhones, iPods, Macs and other products, each AirPod has its unique serial number. Linking the serial number with a specific engraving is a possible solution. For me, it is an incredible easter egg that will please :).
