We saw a few new things at this year’s WWDC22 developer conference. Predictably, Apple came out with new systems in the form of iOS and iPadOS 16, macOS 13 Ventura, and watchOS 9. Still, beyond that, we also saw the introduction of the new M2 chip that Apple put in the 13″ MacBook Pro and the completely redesigned MacBook Air. In this article, we look at the new M2 chip and tell you seven things you should know about it.

It’s an SoC

When you say computer, most people think of a body that houses a few essential components, namely the processor (CPU), graphics accelerator (GPU), RAM (RAM), and storage. All these components are then connected through the motherboard to form a whole. However, this is not the case for devices with Apple Silicon chips, as they are so-called systems-on-chip or System-on-Chip (SoC).

Specifically, this means that virtually the entire computer is on a single chip — in the case of Apple Silicon, it’s the CPU, GPU, and unified memory, so a single storage device is out.
