According to Bloomberg, Apple’s board of directors showcased its mixed-reality headset last week, implying that its next big new product category might arrive shortly.

For Apple, the introduction of a new product category has the potential to open up new markets and perhaps recreate the world-changing debut of the iPhone in 2007.

However, if the headset is badly received, it may raise additional questions about the company’s product strategy and execution. Apple Watch, it's most recent significant new product category, was teased in the autumn of 2014 and debuted the following year.

According to Bloomberg, the gadget is a mixed-reality headgear that will employ cameras on the outside to send pictures to high-resolution screens on the interior of the virtual reality headset, a technology is known as “pass-through” augmented reality.

This is a solid indication that the project is nearing completion and that a public product launch is on the horizon.
