Each and every one of the products and services is supported by hardware and software components. It is not simple to manage these basic components, yet doing so is essential and value-driven in IT service management. This management includes all of the resources available to organization, including people, data, and technology as well as value streams, processes, and partners and suppliers.

The article will define assets and configuration management database (CMDBs), differences between asset management and configuration management, and offer additional resources.

A CMDB is defined as data repository used to store data about the IT infrastructure. Discovering, managing, and keeping track of links between IT assets are three of a CMDB’s primary tasks. Along with emphasizing each one’s unique characteristics.

The implementation of effectively conducted change management is no simple objectives. In the world of service management, configuration management is regarded as a unicorn. In reality, there aren’t many real-world examples of configuration management that follow best practices. A delicate balance must be struck between managing configuration information and configuration management. Processes that are tied to them do not benefit from having too little information, while management that is ineffective or inefficient is brought on by having too much knowledge.

These approaches may seem the same, but they are actually different. CMDB contains some assets, but asset management goes beyond the configuration items that make up configuration management. Below are the differences between CMDB and Asset Management:

  1. An asset may be, for instance, the financial resources of your business. These assets contribute to the final results. On the other hands, a configuration items is subject to change control, which is baselined — and that’s not true for every asset.
  2. Asset management keeps track of an asset. From the moment an item is purchased until it is sold, it is managed thorough the asset’s lifecycle. On the other hand, CMDB isn’t really a process. It is a system that centrally stores all the data about the object, asset, or CI.
  3. Asset management can established IT Asset Management (ITAM) which are valuable more to corporates are the main stakeholders since they derive the highest value out of it. CMDB is more valuable for the business service crowd since it focuses more on the operations, availability and service.

CIs serve as the CMDB’s primary structural building blocks. Every component of the IT environment of infrastructure that must be monitored in order to supply an IT service should have its own CI record on the CMDB. Therefore, the role of CMDB in creating effective ITIL implementation is inevitable.

These are ways on how to utilize CMDB and Asset Management!

1. Acts as a central reference point for IT Asset and Infrastructure: CMDB manages all of the infrastructure and IT assets under one system that serves as a single point of contact

3. Supports accurate risk assessment for new changes and deployments: Change managers can utilize CMDB to understand, anticipate, and implement strategies to reduce business disruption

5. Feeds into the SKMS and knowledge management process: Organization needs to have a robust and up-to-date CMDBs for effective knowledge management

7. Facilitates investigation of problem CIs: CMDB allows IT organizations to identify problematic asset classes and keep monitoring incident/problem reports

9. Population and maintenance can be automated: Keep organizations’ changes and records up-to-date by automation

CMDBs and the service asset configuration management process are the key component of ITIL that promotes success at all levels. Efficient IT asset management procedures laid in the CMDB, which enable organizations to facilitate incident management, gathers data using automated processes, and feeds directly for new modifications.
