Do You Even Like Your Coworkers?
Perhaps not, and I think (eventually) I finally figured out the reason why.
You might have heard the observation, quite a few times if you’re working in the Grand Game of Software Engineering, that people generally only spend time with their coworkers because they’re paid to do so and, given the choice, wouldn’t spend any time whatsoever with them at all.
Thing is, us developers (i.e. commonly the only technical people in an organisation), generally do get along with each other. Sure, we have our differences over which language is the correct one to use for a specific problem¹ and whether we use spaces or tabs in our editors² but we are united in our dislike of obsessive process, agile practices, and management in general — all of which get in the way of actually getting anything done.
We also tend to get along with the graphic designers (remember them?) and sometimes even the front end guys (I like to think of these as failed Full Stackers or aspiring web developers who tried programming but couldn’t get their head around SQL).
Though, I do have to say that graphic designers tend to be quite liberal and reactionary these days and really aren’t too fond of the new tech agenda (i.e. inventing new things, making the future better, and especially anything even remotely like “AI” — something that’s currently rapidly…
