Electric Tractors are here, shall we call them ETs?

A 40 horse power tractor with a 28-kilowatt hour battery, providing 4 to 8 hours of operation, is available for around USD$45,000. The difference in operation time depends on whether the ‘power take off’ PTO is being used to run other machinery. This size tractor is suited to small farms, vineyards and parks and gardens and would be particularly useful in glasshouse operations. Solectrac eUtility eUtility Electric Tractor — Solectrac

There are several makes or brands of electric tractors available which I will list here. I have no commercial affiliation or any connection at all with electric tractor manufacturers or sales. It is just that if we are going to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030 and to zero by 2050, we need to do everything we can now to promote and use green technology.

Tractors lend themselves to electric battery power, batteries are heavy which aids traction needed in tractors, tractors don’t travel far from home base and the charging source, they are much quieter than internal combustion engine tractors providing more operator comfort, with no hazardous fumes affecting the operator and they have far fewer moving parts or oil making maintenance a lot simpler.

Power supply comes from batteries and can be extended by battery swap. Other technologies being developed are separate energy supply vehicles, and cable supply of electricity to the tractor but this is more suited to autonomous vehicles working back and forth across a paddock.

Monarch Electric. Driver Optional. This 55kw, 70Hp tractor has many technological features which make it autonomous if desired and the tractor can even be directed to follow you in the field. Price of the tractor will start around USD$50,000 and be available late in 2021. Monarch Tractor Electric Tractor

Battery powered small hand tools are commonly available now, such as walk behind lawn mowers, line trimmers, chainsaws and blowers. A colleague recently bought an expensive high end, battery lawn mower and blower, with high capacity batteries and a second battery for swapping, making the tools more suitable for commercial use where longer run time is needed.

He demonstrated how quiet the blower was and said “There is a business opportunity here!” Meaning a clean green and quiet garden maintenance round; who hasn’t been annoyed by the noise from a blower?

Using green in a business name such as Green Gardening Services doesn’t quite have the same promotional impact in gardening, but I’m sure you get my point. Maybe Green Green Gardening Services.
