You’ve probably heard phrase “you only realise how much you miss something when it’s gone” many times. We have a similar one in the grand game of software engineering which, with a bit of opposition and paraphrasing, goes something like “you only realise how bad something is when you don’t do it for a while and somehow feel a lot better about both yourself and life in general”.

Holiday Escapism

I’ve always thought, myself, that the whole concept of going on holiday to escape from a job for a few weeks a year is a pretty bad thing to do — mainly because if you have to escape from a job to stay sane then you’re probably better off finding a better job rather than enduring it just to get away for a few weeks a year from it.

I can see the attraction of travelling, don’t get me wrong — seeing new places, meeting new people, taking selfies in front of buildings and all that¹ — but travelling to escape something I view as a kind of self-deception.

It’s just not something I do, to be honest. I keep away from strangers (as we all should), have enough of people (co-workers) and places (offices) already — if I travel it’s for…
