Survival is vitally important in the Grand Game, as it is for most people outside of the Game, but when doing our great software related work we really do need to be mentally present, a little bit happy on the inside, and very properly paid.

If you’ve been served with one of those tiresome “return to office” emails from the faceless droids in HR, or middle management has thrown all of its toys out of its pram because there’s no-one to watch anyone, then you’re going to need some coping skills.

If you’ve not already put in your notice, and set your ejector seat ready for the backup role you had in your back pocket all long, you may have to spend at least a short time in the office while you map out your next move¹.

From the progressive engineer’s fabled and somewhat occult “Tome of Secrets” here follows a brief lighthearted assortment of (possibly slightly unethical) tips to get you through that transitional period or indeed any time when you just need some space but you’re stuck in a shared open space with other people.
