This is the 30th edition of CrunchX and here are the stories and resources we thought were worth spending the time.

1. Apple overhauls built-in Mac anti-malware you probably don’t know about

I’m a committed Mac user (and have been for a long time) and simply wouldn’t develop code on any other platform. Generally, there’s a mistaken belief that malware and virus protection is either sub-standard or unnecessary in macOS, but that’s not the case. Apple has been working on anti-malware programs for a long time with a range of features under the hood
Ars Technica goes into a brief overview in their interesting article from which it’s worth following the links if you weren’t completely aware of such features as Gatekeeper, Notarisation, or System Integrity Protection. Written by Andrew Cunningham on Ars Technica and editorial selection by Dr. Stuart Woolley. Read the article here:

2. Homomorphic encryption could revolutionize privacy — so what is it?

If you’re a casual mathematician such as myself you might be aware of Cedric Villani, who has a reputation not only for his mathematics but also for his sartorial elegance. Fast Company has an insightful (and suitably mathematically detailed) article detailing the potential of homomorphic encryption being pushed by French startup Ravel, to which Villani is an advisor. Written by Alex Pasternack on Fast Company and editorial selection by Dr. Stuart Woolley. Read the article here:

3. Best Practices for Data Storytelling

Data Storytelling is the art of visualizing insights from data with the usage of a narrative form. It can be achieved by giving the data a specific context such as chronological order or digestible explanations in order to make the data more understandable. This article shows some best practices of how data storytelling can be done. Written by Michal Baumgartner on TDWI and editorial selection by Christianlauer. Read the article here:

4. Using Machine Learning to identify undiagnosable Cancers

Researchers at the Robert-Koch Institute have created an AI algorithm that is able to determine previously undiagnosable cancer types by taking a closer look at the gene expression programs that are concerned with early cell development and differentiation. Written by Bendta Schroeder on MIT News and editorial selection by Christianlauer. Read the article here:

5. Why do Businesses suck at using Data?

Since cloud computing should help enterprises to leverage their data, a study by Snowflake has shown that only 38% of the companies that use cloud solutions are able to optimize their data. This article describes some reasons why businesses fail at leveraging their data and suggests possible solutions for this problem. Written by David Linthicum on InfoWorld and editorial selection by Christianlauer. Read the article here:

6. Why to create a more Data-Conscious Company Culture

It is important to raise awareness of data within all parts of a company. Thus, data silos can be avoided and the company can work more efficiently. In order to get there, it is extremely important that everyone within the organization should know how to read and analyze the collected data. Written by Nathan Eddy on InformationWeek and editorial selection by Christianlauer. Read the article here:

7. On Estimates

Estimates slow us down. Why and how? Denis goes deeper and reveals interesting facts. A good read if you want to change your opinion on estimates. Written by Denis Stebunov on GitHub and editorial selection by Miloš Živković. Read the article here:

8. Developer Experience Infrastructure (DXI)

What’s developer experience? Kenneth writes on how DX matters, and why API isn’t enough. What I like is research on why DX matters. An important read for any developer. Written and published by Kenneth Auchenberg and editorial selection by Miloš Živković. Read the article here:

9. Hackers caused a massive traffic jam in Moscow using a ride-hailing app

The ride-hailing service, which is owned by the Russian internet giant, Yandex, added that the jam lasted about 40 minutes and that its “algorithm for detecting and preventing such attacks has already been improved to prevent similar incidents in the future”. Written by Emma Roth on The Verge and editorial selection by Aniket. Read the article here:

10. Meta’s chip deal with Qualcomm may reflect its unrealized VR ambitions

The press release says the chips will be “customized” for Meta’s needs. Still, we don’t know how much space that can put between its “premium” devices and other manufacturers’ hardware that hews closely to Snapdragon. There could be situations where we use off-the-shelf silicon or work with industry partners on customizations, while also exploring our own novel silicon solutions. Written by Mitchell Clark on The Verge and editorial selection by Aniket. Read the article here:
