Often, the interview is the only insight but there are other places you can look.

It’s extremely unfortunate that unless you already know someone working at a particular company that the only insight you can get into the people already working there is at interview.

After all, it’s extremely hard to get an insight into what it’s like to be a software engineer on a dev team if you’re only given the company’s products, press releases, and podcasts to make an informed decision.

We’ve all seen, or inadvertently been a party to, how marketing can massage the perception of a product to make something that deserves to on fire in a dumpster into being the ‘next must have’ thing.

Add to that that the people already employed there are hardly likely to be posting objective, and therefore, accurate assessments of their day to day work on LinkedIn for obvious reasons.

You might think that Glassdoor would have something useful, but the perception of the amount of (alleged) fake posts, gaming of the system, and forced post removal (from company requests) that goes on over there is pretty much right up there with (alleged) Amazon product ‘reviews’ or where to eat advice from TripAdvisor (allegedly).
