I Replaced My Project Manager With An “AI”

--

Naturally, no-one noticed. But, I think I’m really onto something.

“Image generated using OpenAI’s DALL·E.”

In the modern Grand Game of Software Engineering where remote work has given most of us some kind of actual life, along with the space to actually get some work done from time to time, it’s hilariously easy to avoid most people that used to annoy us in the nauseous pre-pandemic meatspace of dire office life.

As we’re even more physically distant than usual¹ and communicate primarily online it’s therefore reasonably easy to bluff malfunctioning cameras to take calls on the toilet (if you can filter out the usual ceramic echo), converse from the pub (if you filter out the clinking of glasses, football chants², and general hubbub), even (if you’re one of those who thinks they’re some kind “digital nomad”, how passé, but really just lives like a vagrant in a hostel somewhere without reliable internet) near a windy beach.

But, those are mere trappings, decorations, accoutrements for the more discerning and highly progressive software engineer who wishes to remain as remote as possible — literally and metaphorically³.

The true professional not only masquerades as being “always on” through scripts to manipulate the little Teams icon to keep it green, but also automates as much of their work as is possible.
