Hi everyone, it’s me again! This time I would like to use Google Trends to know the trends in specific lines of work, it’s data science. Don’t worry, you always can do it by yourself by implementing what I do to check on your lines of work. Without further ado, let’s go!

What is the trend of Data Science for the last 10 years?

Let’s start with this topic which some experts said is “the sexiest job of the 21st century.”

Comparison between Data science (Field of study), data science (search term), Data Scientist (Profession), and data scientist (search term) using Google Trends. Filter: Worldwide, Past 10 Years, All categories, Web search.
Additional note by Google Trends on the unusual spike starts on 1 January 2016 and 1 January 2022.

As we can see, Data science as a “field of study” or a common “search term” is hot, REALLY HOT! for the last 10 years. However, Data scientists as a “profession” or a common “search term” is increasing too, but the amount of searches is not as high as data science.

In my humble opinion, it’s caused because not only Data Scientists currently in professional works that use data science.

Many roles are also used, such as Machine Learning Engineer, Data Analyst / Engineer, Business Intelligent Analyst / Engineer, and even some roles in Product / Marketing / Sales / Customer Experience preferred to have experience in data science. Let’s try to look for trends that are related to the Data science field.

Comparison between Data Science, Machine learning, and Deep learning for the last 10 years.

We could see from the graph above that trend in Machine Learning is heavily correlated with the trend in Data Science because those two topics can’t be separated from each other. Also, I add Deep Learning to know if this advanced topic also increased or not, it’s not as rapid as the other topics, but it gave us the sign that it’s also getting popular currently.

Data Science (field of study) interest by region

We could see that the Top 5 Regions in the last 10 years that have the highest interest in Data Science are Singapore, India, Nigeria, Nepal, and Kenya. I think that explains why to my knowledge, data science grows faster in Singapore and India.

Data Science (field of study) related topics. Filter: Rising.

Currently rising topics related to data science are Machine, Master of Science, Artificial Intelligence, Internship, and Software Developer. Common knowledge that some big companies prefer to have Data Scientists with a minimum education of a Master's degree, even a Ph.D. Understandable Artificial Intelligence is related to data science. Quite interesting we find a Software Developer here, I think it would be great if you aspired to be a Software Engineer to know some knowledge related to data science.

Data Science (field of study) related queries. Filter: Rising.

As we can see, “python” appeared on 1 and 2 here. It gives us information that Python as a programming language is needed if you want to know or learn about data science.

Now we want to check the “Machine Learning” term because it’s heavily correlated to data science. I’m wondering if could we get different insights or not.

Machine Learning (Software classification) interest by region

It’s a little bit different, the Top 5 Regions are China, South Korea, Singapore, Ethiopia, and India.

Machine Learning (Software classification) related topics. Filter: Rising.

Interesting, right? Microsoft Azure currently rising as a computer application that relates to machine learning. Also, Coursera is a place to learn about a lot of things related to machine learning. Kaggle is a place to test your knowledge by joining a data science competition. And so on you can read it above.

Machine Learning (Software classification) related queries. Filter: Rising.

Not too much difference between this one and the previous one. So yeah I think that concludes our simple data analysis using Google Trends to answer the “What is the trend of Data Science for the last 10 years?” I think all of us agree, that data science or machine learning, are hot topic currently, and it still increasing. Before we end this post, let’s see how data science compared to other topics that exist inside technology companies.

Comparison between Data Science, Product Management, and Software Engineering, for the last 10 years.

CONCLUSION

  1. Data science or machine learning is still increasing for the last 10 years, but it’s get declined a bit when COVID-19 came.
  2. We could look into specific regions such as Singapore, India, China, and South Korea to know more about why it’s growing significantly there.
  3. To learn more about data science or machine learning, we have to learn about Python programming language (a lot of free courses out there if we can’t afford the paid one), try to look into Coursera as a place to learn about data science and machine learning, after that we can try to join data science competition in Kaggle to try to implement what we already learn, and also learn about why Microsoft Azure is rapidly rising currently.
  4. Comparing Data Science, Product Management, and Software Engineering, the difference is quite high, Data Science appeared as #1, followed by Software Engineering #2 and then Product Management #3. However, it does not mean that the other topics are not popular or not needed, we have to consider that maybe, the data science term is just an outlier, that’s why if we compare it to other topics, the gap is just too far.

Last but not least, I hope after reading this, you are encouraged to try Google Trends and trying to make your own data analysis based only the data Google Trends provides for us, try it on topics you are interested first, so it can gives you additional motivation. :D
