Let’s look at how to choose a new MacBook Air 2022 with an M2 chip. Apple didn’t make this choice easy for us as it added a 24GB unified memory option, whereas MacBooks with M1 only had 8 or 16GB on offer. This issue was previously covered a lot by Mark Ellis, who confirmed this fact by naming his podcast after it. Now, however, we are not only facing the question of 8GB or 16GB, but we also have the 24GB mentioned above.

In this buying guide, I’ll try to mention who is suitable for which unified memory configuration and also take a closer look at the slower SSD issue that has come up in conjunction with M2 chips. An essential prerequisite for making the right choice is choosing a MacBook Air with at least 512GB SSD to eliminate the potential read and write speed issue.

I almost forgot to mention one disturbing fact, and that is that you pay $200 for the expansion drive, which is equivalent to the price of a 2TB external NVME drive.
