This quarter @Stanford University, one of the courses I’m taking is CS148 Introduction to Computer Graphics and Imaging.

As a beginner in computer graphics, you might be wondering: What are the tools for the things I want to achieve? How are these tools different?

In this article, I’m going to talk about 5 main tools in the CG world: Maya, 3ds Max, Houdini, Cinema 4D and Blender. Getting to know the differences in these 5 popular tools can make you feel closer to what you need to create.

Almost every course assistant(there are 6 of them) in my class uses Maya except for one. That’s an 83.333333% usage rate of Maya. That alone tells me something: Maya is primarily considered and widely used.

Maya is famous in the filmmaking, visual effects and animation industry. You can find many magnificent examples by going to their website. The reason they are great in this area is that the tool has really powerful animation capabilities. It is very customizable. It has an extensible language that can be used to build lots of tools and pipeline related to things…
