Should You Relocate For A Job?

A short missive on something that should really be pretty obvious.

Of course the answer to this question in 2023, generally, is a hard no.

I’d going to posit, and defend rigorously, the position that the only reason you should actively consider relocation is if you yourself actually want to move or you yourself absolutely have to move.

Let’s look at a few “use cases” as some people say in the Grand Game when they really mean scenarios.

Want to Move

You may just want to live in a particular city or geographic area.

Perhaps you’re bored of where you are or desire a specific thing that a location has to offer such as cultural significance, better nightlife, or (in my case at least) a coastal setting.

Your life should always be the primary driver here and your employment a secondary concern.

Companies tend to live for a fairly long time unless they get fixated on a single idea (e.g. the “metaverse”) or have a single cash cow that will eventually run dry (e.g. an office suite of applications or putting ads in searches) and will most likely outlive you, at least until the Singularity hits, so you should always be thinking of what’s best for yourself rather than your employer.
