The need to write less Boilerplate code

During my time in University from 2006 till 2011, i’ve always been taught by my lecturers that in programming it is all about writing code. The more code you write the better.

Software Development is all about writing code. And if you’re not writing code, then it is not proper software development because software development is all about writing code.

Until recently that is.

I have personally seen a trend that is developing. Over the last few years, there seem to be a strong push by the industry to write less code.

A lot of industry experts and community members have been slowly and steadily advocating the need to write less boilerplate code. I’ve been to conferences, meetups, summits and hearing lots of talks & presentation going about it. I’ve seen many blog posts and other online articles suggesting the requirement to remove boilerplate code. First hand i’ve come across numerous frameworks (especially Spring though), and libraries to help us achieve less boilerplate code.

It is not that these so-called ‘boilerplate’ code is bad or anything but rather, they feel it is needless. They consider them redundant. They think it is too much noise (to get something achieved).

Fair enough. So what people talking about is that the verbosity of the code…
