The Problem With “Code Smells?”

Most are arbitrary, pedantic, and a matter of personal preference!

I know a number of people who outright hate the term, saying things like “it’s yucky” or “you shouldn’t be so insulting”. That’s kind of the point of using it. When something is wrong, you say it’s wrong. If you can do so with a creative aphorism, all the better. I don’t have a problem with the term itself, it’s correct. An experienced developer can “smell” something is wrong in reading a section of code. Which sounds odd but…
