3. How to choose a career in tech that benefits humanity
One of the most important things about working in software engineering, at least in my opinion, is that you work on something that makes a difference, something that makes you want to get up in the morning, and something that challenges you and your skills. It’s going to be dull being a run-of-the-mill generic ‘developer’ and this article from Fast Company illustrates one of the points well, choosing something to work on that benefits us all. Written by William Macaskill and Ben Todd on Fast Company and editorial selection by Dr. Stuart Woolley. Read the article here:

4. RegExr, RegEx101, RegEx Tester
Regular expressions, or regexes, are a big part of my life and one of the first things I ever learned in computer science in my early UNIX days. Even now they’re probably the most common programming challenge I come across in pretty much every role I’ve chosen to work with since. These days it’s a little easier to test your knowledge than it used to be (having to compile and run programs, endlessly…) and sites like RegExr, RegEx101, and RegEx Tester are excellent resources that support a range of different regex implementations allowing you to test expressions in real-time. Very highly recommended. Editorial selection by Dr. Stuart Woolley and view the tools here:

9. Google opens the door for Android apps that work across all kinds of devices
The SDK is supposed to let developers do three key things with their apps: discover nearby devices, establish secure connections between devices, and host an app’s experience across multiple devices. According to Google, its cross-device SDK uses Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ultra-wideband to deliver multi-device connectivity. Written by Emma Roth on The Verge and editorial selection by Aniket. 10. Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg won’t be deposed over the Cambridge Analytica scandal
The lawsuit alleged that Facebook illegally shared user data with third parties, and said the company didn’t adequately protect that data from being abused by bad actors. Zuckerberg faced questions from Congress in 2018 that didn’t do much to clear up the scandal or explain exactly what happened with Cambridge Analytica, a firm hired by the Trump presidential campaign that was able to scrape data from millions of Facebook profiles.
