Why I’d Like To Work In HR
Not really, but it’s an interesting thought experiment — if you can endure the Prosecco.
I’ve never been a fan of rules and regulations, being told what to do and when to do it, or pretty much anything along those lines.
You can probably work this out pretty easily should you have read any of my previous articles about how the modern day corporate institution of HR operates very much akin to the German Democratic Republic’s MfS, or Stasi, back in the olden, but golden (at least by modern standards) Cold War days.
They do have an awful lot in common, if you think about it.
With the Stasi you were constantly informing on your friends, family, and neighbours, with HR you are also informing on your colleagues, managers, and anyone else within range via the “360” review process. At least it’s only every year, or if you’re really unlucky every 6 months¹.
The Stasi tapped your phone, read your correspondence, and bugged your apartment. HR has the IT department read and forward you email, log your keystrokes, and “monitor” your productivity with modern corporate spyware, sorry, security software. Just to make sure you’re assessed correctly during your next performance review, of course.
