Determining the authenticity of art can be rather arbitrary, as Ivan describes. The conclusion of one appraiser can come quickly, without scientific evidence, and can affect the opinion of other appraisers.

Watch the video (less than 2 minutes) to hear from private collector and art expert, Ivan

“I have doubts on photos, many, many times. I would say, fakes, they’re everywhere. People even say that, in the Museum of Fine Arts, two-thirds of them are fake. Because it’s very, very difficult, and even experts don’t always agree. I have another story, it was the person who restores my art in Paris.

She had two pieces that, she’s been restoring paintings forever, right, for museums and she said ‘honestly, these two were as right’ you know, the two were absolutely right according to her estimate.

But she called the expert, the world expert, there’s one identified person who identifies these.

This person walks in the room, and from ten feet away says, ‘The one on the left is right, the one on the right is wrong, uh, is fake.’ And that’s it.

So even when you have a Certificate of Authenticity, who knows, and we’ve seen experts generation after generation contradicting what the other was saying. So yes, I’m always concerned that, you know, these things are right or fake, right? So you, you always take a risk with that. Now the more people you have who can take a look at it, and you can have multiple opinions the more comfortable you’re going to be.”
