“When I’m buying art, documentation is really important, what I look for usually is provenance records such as certificate of authenticity. What is really curious is that there is no standards. So sometimes it can mean a sheet of paper where the artist was writing, “ I created and title in 2015”, which is really odd when you can see that how much other markets have standards for that kind of documentation. So provenance and certificates would be the first thing, moving and often the seller, the consignor is going to have that documentation for works or contemporary artworks.

Moving from that’s ideal because with those certificates of authenticity you can analyze if the state of the artists usually issues that kind of documentation, if the documentation is consistent with other certificates for that same artist and moving from that that the needs when becomes quite difficult because you can rely on catalogs that mention the works or previous exhibitions or even photographs sometimes. But then it is when becomes quite a gray area in what consists of enough documentation proving the provenance of an artwork.” — Brunno Silva, Art Collector and Curator

About Codex

Codex is the leading decentralized title registry for the $2 trillion arts & collectibles (“A&C”) ecosystem, which includes art, fine wine, collectible cars, antiques, decorative arts, coins, watches, jewelry, and more. Powered by the CodexCoin native token, the Codex Protocol is open source, allowing third-party players in the A&C ecosystem to build applications and utilize the title system. Codex’s landmark application, Biddable, is a title-escrow system built on the Codex Protocol, which solves long-standing challenges in auctions: non-performing bidders, lack of privacy, and bidder access. The Codex Protocol and CodexCoin will be adopted as the only cryptocurrency by The Codex Consortium, a group of major stakeholders in the A&C space who facilitate over $6 Billion in sales to millions of bidders across tens of thousands of auctions from 5,000 auction houses in over 50 countries.
