The past week, I attended the FOSSASIA annual conference that happened in Singapore.

The conference was organized by FOSSASIA, which is Asia’s largest Open Source organization with an aim to make better softwares accessible by everyone.

The event featured speakers from organizations like Google, Microsoft, Daimler, JP Morgan, VLC, RedHat ( and Coding Blocks ;) ) speaking on topics ranging from Open Source, AI, ML, Cloud, Mobile, Web, etc.

Day 1:

We started out by mentoring the UNESCO hackathon which was aimed at building sustainable tech solutions for the emerging markets and saw solutions and participants from over 10 different countries.

Me, Damini Satya and Saptak Sengupta at the UNESCO Hackathon

Day 2 :

On this day were were moderating and speaking in the Web and Mobile Tracks

The track saw over 12 speakers (including me and aayush) with topics ranging from cross platform apps, Kotlin, Web Automation, etc.

My talk at the event was on Android track in which I spoke on the benefits of Kotlin and over the competition.

aayush, on the other hand, spoke on Progressive Web Apps in the Web Track and why you should have one for the web product that you aim on building.

Day 3 :

On Day 3, I visited the Google Singapore Office and shared our experiences as GSoC and GCI mentors in 2018 where we shared insights on the projects worked on by FOSSASIA in Google Summer of Code 2017 and our plans for Google Summer of Code 2018.

The event had speakers from over 20 Open Source Organizations who participated in GSoC and GCI in past.

If you smell …

Day 4 :

Day 4 was the last day of the event and focused on community interaction and meeting with other speakers, volunteers and attendees of the event.

I got to meet a lot of geeks and nerds in the development community who absolutely loved ranting out stuff about Windows!

P.S. Did we mention all the cool gadgets I got to see?!

Yeah, that’s a full blown laptop!

Day 4 ended with a word of thanks to all the awesome people who made the event possible with a promise to be even bigger and better the next year and a much needed group picture of the Indian FOSSASIA community! :D
