We were playing cards when Nan showed me her mask.

Gray and faded, peeling strands of thread.

It suited her well and she wore it with a smile.

Even when it frayed and split, ends undone.

Sometimes she forgot she was wearing it.

We never told her, but sometimes we forgot too.
