5 Ways You Can Start Getting Organized

Most of us have a big tendency to stuff everything anywhere we can. I know I did, but I’m trying to get better. Stuffing everything anywhere means we won’t be able to find that one thing when we really need it. Therefore, we all need to be organized, or at least try to be anyway.

Last September when I started college, I received a custom-made backpack from a few family friends as a graduation gift. It had pockets and zippers, but I had no folders to put papers and stuff in. So, I just crammed everything in my backpack. Bad idea! When my instructor would tell us to take something out, I could never ever find it right away because the assignment would always be buried at the bottom of my backpack where it shouldn’t be. That’s how much junk accumulated.

Being organized is key to being less messy. I ALWAYS must be organized because if I’m not, I won’t be able to find a single thing. I’m trying to get better this year with being organized and not accumulate so much junk in my backpack. So far, I’m doing good, let’s hope I can keep it up.

Are you one of those messy types of people looking for ways to be organized? Here are a few ways you can get on the road to being organized:

1. Make yourself some folders- Grab some used folders from home and label them. That way you can put every piece of paper you get where it belongs. I’m using these this year and they work very well. This will help you get into the habit of putting your papers somewhere safe instead of just stuffing them anywhere.

2. Get rid of stuff you don’t need- If you don’t need a paper or assignment, get rid of it. Don’t leave it inside the folder, too much stuff will cause the folder itself to get too heavy and eventually rip. Don’t want that to happen now do we? Getting rid of the papers we don’t really need can help avoid things from ripping.

3. Keep your desk neat- If you use a desk for coloring and writing, we tend to buy a ton of things for mostly coloring like crayons, colored pencils, and markers. Once we use any of these tools, we tend to not put them away and clean up once we're done. My advice would be to put everything away, even if you really don’t want to. Not putting everything away can make your desk look messy. You don’t want that, right?

4. Manage your time- College life is all about managing your time. Getting your assignments done and getting to class on time. If you're still in high school, start getting into the habit of getting to class on time and getting your assignments done before they are due. It’ll come in handy in the long run once you get to college.

5. Get yourself a planner- Now, we all know a lot of us don’t have the best memory, I don’t sometimes. It’s tough to remember things when we don’t have the sharpest mind. That’s why you should go to a store like the Dollar Store. You can find yourself a planner for a dollar! Getting this will help you to remember things very easily. You can write down doctor appointments, things you need to get done on a certain day, and ect…. Planners will make the people who don’t have the best memories lives so much easier!

I know it’s hard to be organized and I know it’s a hard habit for some of us to break when we are so used to being unorganized people. My hope though is that with these five simple steps, you can be well on your way to becoming organized!

Good luck and happy organizing!
