Just Because It Can

Slowly wriggling along a branch,
green and yellow,
plump and plain. Unremarkable
in its journey.

The caterpillar travels toward
a humble weed of its choosing:
milkweed. Common food for
common eating.

The chrysalis is formed and is
decorated with a single
ring of gold. Real gold;
a miracle in its own right.

A monarch emerges and
dries its wings, fans them until
it flies off leaving the
gold crown. Adornment

fit for royalty.
The gold created left behind.
What other insect or animal can
create real gold? The Monarch

Does it just because it can.
