Chapter 5 Deena

Deena Grayson sat on the back of the bus and tried her hardest to sleep before arriving at her destination. Her hands were fidgeting the whole way through. She just could not stop being nervous. All Deena knew was that in 7 hours she would arrive in North Carolina and would be coming face to face with her sister Mildred.

Mildred needs to let me see my kids.

She just has too!

As this thoughts race through her mind. She began having flashbacks of the past.

Deena recalled Maria calling out to her.

“Mama, get up? “

“Maria, please stop being a baby!”

“Mama, Toby and I need you!”

“Maria, please stop this, you can handle this hun!”

In the present, Deena could not stop from crying.

She scolded herself.

No, this time it will be different.

I am sober now. I have been for the last 14 months.

Still, she could not help but feel guilty for all the pain she caused.

Okay, I must focus. I can’t keep beating myself up for this.

But Deena knew that it was not going to be easy. Maria and Toby wanted nothing to do with her.

I must show them I have changed.

I can do this.

Right?

She took the photograph of Maria and Toby and just stared at it.

Oh, my babies.

I miss you so much.

I need to be with you.

Suddenly the bus stopped, and Deena realized it was time to get something to eat. As she got off, she walked into the small diner and ordered some coffee to go with her egg biscuit. Then she sat on the table and reflected on what she would do once she got to North Carolina.

I wonder what Mildred will say not to mention her husband.

I just want to see my kids.

I hope my dear sister does not make it hard!

Deena closed her eyes, and she could envision herself walking by a beach and feel the waves of the water hit her feet like the past which haunted her.

I will get my children back; at least Toby, since he is still a minor.

I will make Maria trust me again, and there is nothing Mildred can do to stop me.

She had just finished her coffee when she noticed it was time to get back on the bus.

It won’t be long now.

Deena smiled to herself as she walked back up the bus. It was starting to get darker

I will see you soon my babies.
