Maria’s Song

Chapter 1

The sirens awoke a 7-year-old Maria Grayson and her younger brother Tobias (Toby for short) who was only 2 years old.

“It’s okay Toby just stick with me okay,” Maria cried out to her brother.

Toby could not understand what was going on, but he did his best to follow his older sister.

Maria became nervous as she walked towards her mother’s room. As she walked towards it, she began to close her eyes and pray.

Oh Lord please let mama be okay.

Once she arrived, Maria looked at her younger brother.

“Toby, wait here okay.”

“Mama” he cried.

“Yes Toby I am getting her just wait here!” she exclaimed nervously.

Her voice was shaky, and her hands began to tremble.

Meanwhile, Toby stood behind Maria and held on to his teddy bear.

Maria tried to compose herself but was all too familiar with what she would find. This was not the first time she had been through this. Unfortunately for Maria, all the signs pointed to her mother, Deena. Just for this brief moment, she was hoping that her mother had done the right thing by them.

Okay now, Mom did promise she would be here for us and that all the bad stuff was not ever going to come back again.

Still, even with her young age, Maria felt uneasy and her tiny hands could not stop from trembling.

However, she needed to keep up a smile for Toby. She did not want him to start to cry.

Lord, please let is all be alright.

She had closed her eyes while she prayed for a few minutes when suddenly Maria was shaken by the loud yells she overheard coming from downstairs.

Oh No No she cried within herself.

Sadly for Maria, all that she had feared was happening all over again.

“Maria, Maria where are you?” screamed her mother, Deena.

Maria’s heart jumped as she gathered the courage to answer her mother.

“I am here Mom.”

“Well get down now!” she cried.

Then she overheard a man’s voice.

“Mam, Mam, you need to calm down!”

Looking right at her younger brother. Maria began to take him to his room.

“Toby, listen to me baby, you must stay here okay.”

“Mama, Mama, he called.

“Hey listen, buddy, I am going to check on Mama now. Just stay here.”

Toby looked at Maria. He did not understand at only 2 years old what was happening around him.

“I promise Toby I will be back.”

She gave him a tearful smile and then walked out of his room.

As she walked closer, Maria tried to recall a moment when things used to be okay, and she tried to hold on to that for the time being.

“Maria, help me! cried her mother.

“Mam, Mam you must stay calm.”

But as she got closer what she saw next would change their lives forever.
