They say when you have a child; it’s like having your heart walking around outside your body. My mother and daughter story is different from the ordinary. I started out small, Micro Premie the doctors called me. My survival was always a question that was never answered with certainty. Mom, you had a simple message for me day in and day out.

Almost like a chant, if you will. That went like this: “Fight Jessica, keep fighting for mommy.” So, fight I did, and here I am almost 37 years later. Not every path a mother and daughter will walk in this life will be the typical kind. But that’s the beautiful thing about the connection between a mother and their child, that is the epitome of true love.

The love between a child and their mother defies death trying to take her baby far too soon. It’s that kind of love that fights for their child to be seen as an equal by a world who still doesn’t understand the term, “special needs,” and some who still try to deny and shame that bond calling that child anything but a gift. Mom, it is because of you I am the woman I am, and it is because of you I have found out just how powerful my voice is. You were my very first teacher; you were and are my confidante, my advocate. You have also believed in me, told me that when I speak people listen.

Mom, I can’t express to you had much I admire and appreciate what an amazing life you and daddy have given to me. I am so proud to share so many of your traits and personality with such a beautiful soul, and I am even more proud to call that soul my mom. I love you mom, and I cherish our beautiful mother-daughter bond more than you know.
