Realization

It’s taken years,
but he did it … it’s done.

His life’s ambition … his masterpiece,
Every word written down in ink
By his own hand.

Written from his heart, his soul
Words that were torn from him
Night after sleepless night.

His life lay before him,
Page after page of recycled paper.
Always recycled paper.

He had plans for his masterpiece.
he’s planned this moment for years.

He poured himself a glass of scotch,
Sat down by the fire,
and started to cry.

Realization set in … it’s over.
Now what? Start again?

This was his masterpiece
His true life’s ambition … finished.

He took another drink,
Stared at his pages upon pages of work
and cried some more.

Once again, realization crept upon him.

He knew what he had to do,
He wasn’t finished after all.
One last thing had to be done.

One by one he laid each page
Into the flames,
Watching his life filter away
And turn to ash.

Now … Now he was finished.
Now he could rest.

With another drink,
He cried.
