Thanksgiving: 4 Things I’m Thankful For
Thanksgiving is fast approaching. It’s a holiday where we all sit back and reflect on what we’re thankful for. With Thanksgiving a week and a half away, I thought it would be fun to write an article on the things I’m thankful for.
There’s a lot for me to be thankful and grateful for. I have been through so much in life: Surgery, a stroke that caused me to lose all feeling in my entire body, ect…. I’ll try and keep the list short, but I’m impossible at keeping things short and simple. So, here’s what I’m thankful for this year:
1. I’m thankful for family- for the past 19 years, my family has been the most supportive people ever. This journey has not been easy for any of us. We’ve laughed, cried, and prayed hard to God that I would survive and do something with my life when I grew up. They’ve watched me fail, cheered me on, wiped my tears, and seen me succeed
2. I’m thankful for my friends and writing coworkers- my friends are some of the best ones. Yes, I have lost a few due to life and drama, but I’m thankful for the ones that stayed. Everyone that has not left my side has never once judged me for my disability. They’ve looked past the walker and wheelchair and just seem me for me, nothing else. They are always there to help me out and for that, I’m more than grateful. My writing co-workers are some of the most amazing, talented, and encouraging people I’ve ever met. They always push me to do a good job with everything I write, always there to lift me up when I’m feeling down, and always know how to make me laugh and keep a smile on my face.
3. I’m thankful for every single one of my doctors- oh man, I don’t even know where to begin with this one. Some of my doctors have known me since I was a baby, and some just came into the picture. Without their hard work dedication and care, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They never gave up on me no matter how hard it was, and they constantly worked around the clock to get me where I am today. Without them, I don’t know where I’d be right now.
4. Lastly, I’m thankful to just be alive and healthy- I was a fragile little 31-week-old preemie who everyone thought wouldn’t survive. Now, I’m a healthy 19-year-old who’s living the best life possible. I’m thankful to be alive and healthy 19 years later.
It’s important to always remember what your thankful for, not just on Thanksgiving, but every day. Life is short, don’t spend it being unhappy. Be grateful for what you have, even if it’s not absolutely everything you want. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, get rid of negative and toxic people. Be kind to yourself and each other. Hold your loved ones close and hug them as tight as you can, you never know when their last day will be. Tomorrow is never promised, so make the best of today like it’s your last.
