IPCC says “Earth will reach a temperature rise of about 1.5℃ in around a decade”. Governments all over the world are taking action. But, still, every human on earth has a role in averting this global catastrophe.

What if we tell you curbing CO2e is possible and anyone can do it while sipping their morning Coffee?

But first, what has coffee got to do with it?

Did you know that a cup of coffee has 0.209kg of CO2e?

The carbon footprint of 1 cup of coffee may not seem like a lot, but collectively, it all adds up. For example, drinking two cups daily for a year adds up to 153 kg CO2e.

Coffee Industry Challenges

Four billion people drink coffee, and over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide. With 2.25 billion cups being taken daily, it amounts to 470,000 mt per day, 172 million mt of CO2e in a year.

Cafeyoda Mission

Purposeful coffee brands need access to new-gen tools & technologies to bring ‘honestly good coffee’ in the hands of planet loving coffee lovers.

With limited resources, Conscious brands are crushed by MNCs & they get pushed to follow the industry orchestration to survive.

Three Coffee giants control 35% of the coffee consumed in the world. However, this competitiveness at the roaster and retail level does not consider sustainability a critical differentiator. This leads to little to no incentive for the growers to differentiate and improve quality (as there is no price incentive for undertaking such activities). Large Importers and Brands are price dictators and not takers.

The global specialty coffee market was valued at USD 35.9 billion in 2018. The market is expected to grow and reach USD 83.6 billion in revenue by 2025. The Retail Global Coffee industry is estimated to be a $460bn industry, while green coffee global trade is at $20bn.

Importer services are valuable for small to medium roasters who do not wish to undertake the risks and time lags associated with Direct Import. However, importers solely bear the risk of misrepresentation, adulteration, and fraud. Without an adequate system to monitor the activities at the farm level, importers rely on assurances through certifications, site visits, and local agents.

There is no robust technology solution to offer direct visibility of farm activities, direct engagement with growers, or monitoring the entire journey for better control over quality, authenticity, and sustainability.

Agriculture, Environment & Climate Change

As per a recent report by Ohio State Pressbook, For every cup of coffee consumed, it is almost certain that one square inch of a rainforest was destroyed.

An extensive review of published data on coffee land use change suggests that apart from Brazil, where production increases are driven by technology, in nearly all countries where coffee production is expanding rapidly, deforestation is the primary source of new coffee lands. The yearly increase will likely be well more than 100,000 ha yr -1.

Primary forest loss was 2.8% higher in 2019 than before and has remained stubbornly high for the last two decades despite efforts to halt deforestation.

At least 1.8 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions are associated with 2019 primary forest loss, equivalent to the annual emissions of 400 million cars.

Though the rate of primary forest loss was lower in 2019 than in record years of 2016 and 2017, it was still the third-highest since the turn of the century.

Large-scale agriculture is a major driver of deforestation. Governments, NGOs, and the UN are all working towards climate action and environmental protection, and the human race is more aware than ever that we are all in it together.

In its current form, agriculture is one of the largest contributors to GHGs and forest loss. However, this can only change when consumers demand to know that what they are buying is coming via a responsible value chain.

What is CafeYoda Solving?

Conscious coffee businesses and drinkers are seeking a solution to end market concentration, Deforestation and CO2e load from coffee.

Coffee lovers want the best possible coffee experience without displacing flora and fauna of the Rainforests.

Opacity in Supply Chains, CO2e of coffee and Brand Stories

Consumers want high-quality coffee at reasonable prices, expect brands to deliver fair prices to growers, and ensure that the businesses serving the coffee address the environmental crisis.

While this is a fair expectation, the current industry design is opaque and built to serve customers with only their basic need for a cup of coffee.

There is currently no mechanism for customers to validate the brand’s social responsibility claims and stories. This model of relying solely on businesses and governments to tackle the environment and humanitarian crisis has failed to deliver sustainability.

💡Conscious coffee businesses and drinkers are seeking a solution to end animal cruelty, Deforestation and CO2e load from coffee.

What are we bringing to the world?
