Joseph Tejeda facing capital punishment in court

On October 18, 2016, 21-year-old Corpus Christi resident Breanna Wood was reported missing by her mother. Months later, authorities received a tip from a Nueces County jail inmate and within a few hours her body was found in a box wrapped in plastic at an abandoned house, off State Highway 666 and State Highway 1833.

She had been shot in the back of the head, had both of her arms broken, and had been viciously sexually assaulted after her death. It was a heinous crime, one that would have no resolution until seven years later.

Breanna was last seen on October 11th at a PMI supermarket. She was accompanied by a man named Joseph Matthew Tejeda. The last contact Breanna had with anyone was later that evening at around 10 pm when she told her mother she was heading home.

When authorities began investigating Breanna's disappearance, it was discovered that her phone had been disconnected and it appeared she hadn't returned to her apartment. Nothing in the apartment indicated a burglary or struggle had taken place either.

It also didn't seem like Breanna had simply run away, as all her belongings were as she had left them. By October 25th, there was still no news of Breanna and her family held a candlelight vigil, praying for her safe return.
