When Heidi Archer arrived with her husband at the home of her parents, Mark and Susan Petric in Brighton Township, Ohio, on October 20, 2007, she was greeted by her 16-year-old brother Daniel, who was blocking the doorway to the home.

Daniel told her not to come in as their parents had had a huge argument, but when Heidi heard moaning coming from the living room, she pushed past her brother and stepped inside to see a bloodbath. Her mother lay dead on the floor, having been shot in the head.

Her father had also been wounded and was bleeding to death before her eyes. When Heidi called 911, Daniel had already tried to flee the scene in the family’s van. So, what was the cause of this heinous dispute?

Ultimately, it would all boil down to a video game, Halo 3. The Petric family was considered quite tight-knit. Mark was a church pastor and a well-to-do member of the community. He and his wife Susan upheld their Christian values and generally adhered to a life with wholesome morals.

Daniel was different and although he hadn't before shown any signs of dangerous behavior, things began to change after he acquired a staphylococcus infection after a skiing accident. Due to the severe spinal damage incurred from the illness, he was housebound for a year, before he had been considered a fun-loving boy who…
