A summer sunset
Summer sunset on the Hudson River, NY (Author SM, 2024)

Don’t you love the childhood years when the most stressful time was cramming the night before the exam or showing your report card with a poor grade?

The older we get we encounter the stressors of adolescent and adult life. There are enough and more curveballs that we dodge or get slammed with - money matters, relationships, jobs, or health-related.

Every adversity offers an opportunity for personal growth. A divorce during the peak of the pandemic allowed me to pause and evaluate who I was and how I wanted to live my life. After many months of reflection and some inner work, I emerged with a better understanding of how I am responsible for my own happiness and some simple practices that will assist me in my positive outlook on life.

One of those practices was to keep a gratitude journal. It aligned well with my perspective on always seeing situations as “the glass half full.”

A simple (and maybe silly) practice I started a few years back was to wake up each morning by greeting my dog who has been my emotional support during difficult times, “Good morning and thank you, Max.”
