We are Do Me A Solid. We represent the spirit of helpfulness and goodwill between human beings, of “ lending a helping hand,” of "helping a brotha out."

That’s what we’re here for — to do you a solid.

Week 1: Logo Design

— Written by Jennifer Feng —

Discovering Our Identity

We didn’t know each other until we met in this class, a class made for designing the next big idea. We shuffled around with other classmates, talking about potential roles we each could play and what we really wanted to do in life. Eventually, we found ourselves sort of on the short end of the stick, but nonetheless, we had enough skill variety to fill the roster neatly. However, we needed a name — an identity.

We began as a team by playing around with a couple of project ideas. These pitches ranged from sarcastic and witty plays on existing companies to a futuristic space travel idea. It was when one of us suggested another idea for an Uber-like app for favors or odd jobs that we finally arrived at a comprehensive concept for our project:

A locally peer-based skill-contracting platform.

We then set out to discover our identity. We looked at what the product meant for the each of us, and came up with topics of barter, exchange, connection, network/nodes, pinky promises, integrity of quality, odd/big jobs, and hives/bees. Eventually, someone put out the saying, “Do Me A Solid,” and we went for it.

Designing Our Logo

With the identity in place, everyone came up with a few rough designs of logos that we felt best incorporated our meaning and purpose.

Rough Logo Designs

Each design had its own flair. We pointed out specific features we liked from one another’s logos, and we used each other’s work for inspiration. I guess you could say that… we did each other a solid (heh).

New and improved individual logos!

As for our final logo, we took Jennifer’s design and further polished it. We decided to go for a different color scheme, with a darker blue for the font color and the icosahedron (the stylized O). Blue symbolizes loyalty and trust, two characteristics important to our vision — and hey, we all like the color blue.

Here it is!

We may tweak our team logo in the future, but as of now, this is the logo that has resulted from our long and tedious (yet enlightening) design process.

We’re excited to be making progress, as we are just one step closer to doing you a solid!
