Finding our branding

Along with forming our team, we needed to come up with a brand that could easily be translated and incorporated into whatever problem we decided that we need to tackle next. Below are the rough sketches from our team members.

Bare with us, although some of us aren’t the best at drawing, we did end up finding similarities as we continued to share with each other.

But luckily, we do have some that are really good at designing.

Logos by Sharmaine

We must say it is also quite interesting to see Sharmaine display how such a simple logo can be so versatile.

Mock-up of branding by Sharmaine

After looking at everybody’s we narrowed down our results to the following 3 logo designs:

The first two were drawn up by Connie. We were all very drawn towards the one on the left, because just like Jason’s ideas, she incorporated the idea of food if we went down the route of a food themed web application. In the middle, very much like the rest of us, she tried to make a simple logo that one could draw the letters that made up Ipsum. The last logo was created by Sharmaine. It is much like the logo in the middle in that it also plays upon the same idea but in a different fashion.

Final Decision

In the end, we all voted for Sharmaine’s simple geometric logo. We chose this one because not only is it very pleasing to the eye but we feel that much like “lorem ipsum”, this logo can be effective in showcasing our team visually.

Finishing Touches

As a way to make the logo ours, we then came up with our own versions of Sharmaine’s logo.

Sharmaine’s Final Version

“Since my original design was chosen, I decided to just go with it and add some typography. I chose a clean, modern font that I personally think adds more aesthetic and makes the overall design more visually pleasing.”

— Sharmaine

Gabriel’s Version

“Based on the original design, I wanted to add some color, but not a lot to overwhelm. Decided to use a gradient of one color that was appealing and work from there. The end result was this logo.”

— Gabriel

Connie’s Version

“I kept playing around with the ‘S’ and decided to go with something similar to how Isabelle did her ‘S’ in her original mock up, where it crossed the entire figure. I also decided to make the object into a cube because it was more compact and simple. I wanted to keep the entire figure confined to the cube so I decided to put our team name inside the cube.”

— Connie

Jason’s Version

“I really enjoyed the logo that Sharmaine created for us, so this was a challenge to polish. My first thought was to incorporate actual Lorem Ipsum text into the design to further establish a connection between our group name and the design practice. I added the text, tilted it to maintain the perception of a 3-dimensional object, and inverted the diamond to experiment with different colors. This was the outcome.”

— Jason

Isabelle’s Version

“I enjoy clean lines and symmetric geometric shapes. Since Sharmaine’s design is quite similar to one of my original logo sketches it wasn’t too difficult to implement her’s to suit my personal style. I wanted to differentiate the design so that it isn’t simply a hexagon by adding the pink pop of color.”

— Isabelle

Susmitha’s Version

One last thing…

Upon reviewing the individual versions of Sharmaine’s logo, we agreed upon Jason’s version but with different colors of the same color spectrum so that it would be more simple and pleasing to the eye as our very final iteration of our logo creation process.
