Tension arose as an even three to three split with one remaining vote lingering in the air, left our team torn between designing a desktop or mobile prototype….

Sketch prototypes by team members Audrey (desktop) and Chris (mobile)

Week 3 began with a rush. Each of us had come prepared with their own prototype sketch of our application, Cook Nook. It was exciting to see the variations of sketches that we created. Some of us had gone with a mobile application, while others came up with a desktop application version. Features and placement of each design seemed to be crafted and thought out to precise locations. With our different prototypes on deck, we split into two groups and set out to user test our sketches with another team.

User testing with another group

Sitting in with another team and testing their prototype sketches was an interesting feat! My group collaborated with JamInk, whose members were developing a lifestyle app with the purpose of creating a healthy and balanced lifestyle for its users.

Approaching JamInk’s sketches with the intention of quality user interface and experience was refreshing. This was also my first time in a “user testing” setting and it reminded me of the purpose of our assignment, usability! Each member went through their own prototype sketch as we simulated testing by “clicking buttons” and “swiping screens”.

Alas it was my turn to test my own prototype sketch. I had fleshed out my sketch of Cook Nook over the weekend and was eager to showcase my own design. I brought up my sketch on my laptop but immediately wished I had cut each screen out for a more efficient user testing experience.

Nevertheless, those in my group began testing my prototype. As I dove into the features and concepts of my design, I began to recognize where I should have focused more on, but also features that I forgot to add. Saved recipes? Sharing settings?, receiving my peers’ feedback allowed me to envision a greater perspective on the future potential of our final prototype.

Team Git Rekt compiling user testing feedback

As we regrouped into our full team, it was exciting to see how each of my team members had a similar experience in their own user testing.

Team Git Rekt consisted of seven creative minds that had produced seven distinct variations of the same app. None of us had the “perfect prototype”, but where one design lacked, another had! The beauty of teamwork was that ideally combining our sketch prototypes together would create the basis for our developed prototype. However this was much easier said than done. First our team needed to move forward with either the desktop or mobile prototype, so we put the concept up to vote.

Tension arose as an even three to three split with one remaining vote lingering in the air, left our team torn between designing a desktop or mobile prototype. Some of us prefered mobile due to the accessibility of our app. Whereas some suggested that a desktop version would allow for more features and an easier user experience. All points brought to the table were insightful and valid, so we decided that for our next meeting our 2 team prototypes would consist of one desktop and one mobile version!

Preliminary sketches for desktop and mobile

Stay tuned to see which version “gits rekt” and which will become the basis for our final app! LET THE CREATIVE JUICES FLOW~
